Women’s Performance Hockey

University of St Andrews offers students a world-leading academic education alongside a holistic, athlete-centred performance hockey programme.

 

The programme

Led by Director of Hockey Jamie Carnegie, we aim to deliver the very best support and a comprehensive programme of training and competition to enable our top female student players to harness their full potential and achieve sporting and academic excellence whilst studying at St Andrews.

Our vision is to create a programme in which every player competes to the highest level, works hard and enjoys their hockey experience at university.

Athletes on the performance hockey squad get access to a full support package including:

Specialist coaching

skill development and team preparation

Strength and Conditioning

weekly sport specific sessions

Athlete support

physiotherapy, sports psychology, nutrition, recovery, time management

Video analysis

team and individual analysis

Individual skills

1-2-1 sport specific sessions with Head Coach

Athlete monitoring

regular sessions to monitor progress

Sports Therapy

full time in-house support service

Pre-season

full pre-season and off-season training programmes

Competition

British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) championships

The Women’s performance squad currently competes in BUCS Premier North and the BUCS National Trophy.

Scottish Hockey National Premier League

The Women’s performance squad also competes in the Scottish Hockey National Premier League

Scholarships

Scholarships are aimed at players who are already competing at a high level and who believe they have the necessary attributes to be part of a performance hockey programme whilst studying for their degree in St Andrews.

Dry Turf hockey pitch

The new hockey pitch at St Andrews was opened in October 2024 and features a Poligras Paris GT Zero surface as used in the Paris 2024 Olympics. GT zero Dry is the first ever climate-neutral synthetic hockey turf that also offers optimal playing properties, even without watering.
