The University provides many opportunities for students to gain coaching qualifications during their time at St Andrews, running subsidised courses each year.
Our coach education programme allows students to develop their coaching and teaching skills in various training environments throughout the year.Junior Hockey
The Hockey Club has been involved in running a nationally recognised Junior Hockey programme in partnership with Madras Hockey Club, Scottish Hockey and Active Fife.
The programme provides opportunities for club members to coach school children on a Saturday morning each week, helping to develop sport in the local area whilst giving students new coaching experiences in the process. Once students have developed their skills they can begin to work with the student teams at the University.Umpiring
Student umpires are fundamental to the success of the Hockey Club and we are always looking to develop additional umpire resource. Players are encouraged to take a rules test online before gaining experience throughout the year, starting at mixed hockey and training to improve their confidence, before taking on competitive matches.
Each year, student volunteers from St Andrews head to Stellenbosch, South Africa to take part in an international coach development programme in partnership with Stellenbosch University.
Saints Volunteer, Stellenbosch is a 5-week programme that offers students a unique opportunity to gain practical coaching experience and develop key skills through work integrated learning.
Enrolling as International Students at Stellenbosch University, successful applicants will work alongside the International Global Team as part of the International Summer School, before being placed directly within the broader Stellenbosch community to support a number of local schools.
Members of Saints Hockey have been representing St Andrews in Stellenbosch, South Africa every year for the last 5 years. The Saints Volunteer projects have proven amongst volunteers to be an incredibly rewarding and unforgettable experience – if this sounds like something you’d be interested in, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
